Management Information Systems (MIS)

What is a Management Information System (MIS)? 


•An integrated collection of people, procedures, databases, and devices 

•Provides managers with information to help making effective decisions and achieving organizational goals 

•Provides feedback on daily operations.

 


Characteristics of MIS


•The most important source of internal data is the TPS 

•External data are used by the MIS (i.e., customer, supplier and competitor information) 

•Produce scheduled, demand, and exception reports 

•Output reports with fixed and standard formats 

•Produce hard-copy and soft-copy reports .


Outputs of MIS 

•Scheduled reports are produced periodically or on a schedule, such as daily, weekly, or monthly (i.e., a monthly summary report that lists total payroll costs). 

•A key indicator report is a special type of scheduled report that summarizes the previous day's critical activities (i.e., inventory levels or sales volume). 

•Demand reports are produced to give certain information at a manager's request (i.e., an inventory report for a particular item). 

Functional Aspects of the MIS


•Most organizations are structured along functional lines or areas •MIS can be divided along functional lines to produce reports tailored to individual functions.


                


Financial Management Information Systems


•Provides financial information 
•Functions of a financial MIS include: 

•Integrate financial and operational information from multiple sources 
•Provide easy access to data for both financial and nonfinancial users 
•Make financial data immediately available 
•Analyze historical and current financial activity.

Manufacturing Management Information Systems 

•Manufacturing MIS subsystems and outputs 
•Monitor and control the flow of materials, products, and services through the organization 
•Common information subsystems and outputs used in manufacturing 
•Design and engineering 
•Master production scheduling and inventory control 
•Process control 
•Quality control and testing.

Marketing Management Information Systems


•Supports managerial activities in: 
•Product development, distribution, pricing decisions, promotional effectiveness, and sales forecasting

•Concerned with activities related to employees and potential employees of an organization 

•Outputs include:

Accounting MIS 

•Provides aggregate information on accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and many other applications 

Geographic information system (GIS) 

•Capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, and displaying geographic information 

•Data identified according to its location
